Surprised by Joy: Apologetics and the Imagination

The aim of apologetics, the defense of the faith, is to show why our Christian faith is true, but it can be so much more than that. It shouldn’t be just the province of scholars and saints but of ordinary men and women: parents, teachers, lay ministry leaders, pastors, and everyone who wants to develop a stronger faith, to understand why we believe, what we believe, to know our Lord better, and love him more fully.

An imaginative approach to apologetics - in cooperation with rational arguments - can be extremely valuable in helping people come to faith in Christ. To this end Linny proposes ways to create meaning for Christian language in a culture that no longer understands words like ‘sin’ or ‘salvation,’ suggests how to discern and address the manipulation of language, and shows how metaphor and narrative can work in powerful ways to communicate the truth. She applies these concepts to specific key apologetics issues, including suffering, doubt, and longing for meaning and beauty.

Linny Dey is the co-founder of the Imago School, a classical Christian school in Maynard, MA, where she served as academic Head and taught for 36 years. Before settling in Massachusetts, Linny worked with Francis Schaeffer on the film series How Should We Then Live, and then worked at the L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland for several years. Linny is a frequent speaker to church groups and at L’Abri in Massachusetts. She has a BA from Wheaton College, Illinois, and a MAT from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Linny also served as an editor of Touchstone Magazine for many years.

Undergrad Dinner and Bible Study
Jan

to May 6

Undergrad Dinner and Bible Study

Undergraduate Students: Join us at Hill House on Monday evenings from 6-8pm this semester for dinner and a Bible study in the book of Hebrews.

The book of Hebrews makes a unique contribution to the canon of Scripture. Hebrews shows us that the Bible is not a collection of unrelated stories, but is rather one unified story—the story of redemption through Jesus Christ. Simply put, the book of Hebrews helps us unlock the glorious tapestry of God’s progressive revelation. Hebrews helps us unfold the mystery of seeing Jesus Christ throughout the Old Testament.

In the end, we see that the strength of our faith is rooted in the object of our faith.

The good news is that God helps those who cannot help themselves.

Throughout Hebrews, readers are called to respond to the grace of God in worship, and this call is bolstered by the author’s encouraging words, firm warnings, and contrasting examples. It’s not so complicated after all.

Friday Lunch Discussions

Friday Lunch Discussions

Join us over lunch each Friday from 11:45am–1:15-ish pm this semester to discuss and examine recent articles. Read this week's Featured Article for Discussion

Christians have good reasons to be interested in things and in people. Our world is a creation of God, not an accident of nature. The people in it are made in God’s image, but fallen now, and therefore capable of glorious accomplishments and extraordinary evil. So taking the time to thoughtfully consider them is usually worthwhile.

This Fall in our series 'Reading the World', we’ll try to engage both. Each week we’ll examine a different essay drawn from a wide variety of sources in hopes of better discerning who we are, the nature of the world we live in, and how we are called to live as followers of Jesus Christ. If you’re interested, check here a week in advance for the essay we’ll be reading next week, or simply join us Fridays anytime after 11:45 for lunch and discussion.
