Movie Night - A Hidden Life

Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life tells the story of an Austrian farmer’s defiance in the face of a regime that contradicted his deepest beliefs. “A Hidden Life,” a film that puts us deep inside of a situation and examines it in human terms, rather than treating it a set of easy prompts for feeling morally superior to some of the vilest people in history. What’s important here is not just what happened, but what the hero and his loved ones were feeling while it happened, and the questions they were thinking and arguing about as time marched on.

A Theology of the Drug War: Globalization, Violence, and Salvation by Dr. William Walker 111

Based on Dr. Walker’s book A Theology of the Drug War (2019), this lecture will be a political and theological reflection on the violence and injustice that has taken place in Mexico and Central America since 2006 as a result of the drug war. In order to understand and respond to this conflict in the age of globalization, Dr. Walker presents a theology of the drug war that transcends both a Eurocentric conception of the world and a merely political account of salvation.

Dr. Walker serves as Director of Vocation at Christ Church in Austin TX and is a lecturer in theology and ethics at Baylor University and Truett Theological Seminary. He received his PhD in philosophy of religion and theology from Claremont Graduate University and his MDiv from Truett Seminary. His research interests include political theology, economic ethics, and postcolonial studies.

Dinner is at 6, followed by Dr. Walker’s lecture at 7.

Formation of the NT Canon by Greg Grooms

Please join our students on Monday the 24th of February for dinner, followed by a lecture on The Formation of the NT Canon by Greg Grooms

Greg Grooms came to Hill House in August of 1994 from Huemoz, Switzerland, after working with L'Abri Fellowship for 15 years. While studying biochemistry at Tulane University in New Orleans, he discovered his faith needed to grow if it were to survive the questions and pressures of living in the modern world. This led him to Francis and Edith Schaeffer’s study center in the Swiss Alps where the historic Christian faith of his childhood was reaffirmed and expanded to apply to all of life and culture. Greg currently serves as Director of Hill House and Associate Pastor at All Saints Presbyterian Church.

Dinner is at 6, followed by the lecture at 7.

Movie Night - A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Following a young journalist in Lloyd Vogel (known as Tom Junod in reality), as he struggles with his anger, his job, and his family life, he is tasked with interviewing Fred Rogers for the magazine that he works for. Not wanting to do it, he begins to realize that this kind-hearted man may be who he has needed all along. A film about friendship and forgiveness more than a film about Mr. Rogers, it's told through the lens of a friendship with Mr. Rogers. The growing friendship is genuine and intriguing. Honestly the best part of the movie is scenes of these two clashing personalities just talking to each other. It's so simple, just a room and two opposing types chatting, and it's riveting.

Undergrad Dinner and Bible Study

Join us each Monday for dinner at 6 followed by a study of Corinthians as 7. Paul leads the new church in untangling themselves from their former way of life.....such as:

Blessed are you when you feel good about yourself.

Blessed are the winners, movers, and go getters for they shall overwhelm the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for success for they will get there first.

Blessed are those who laugh now for life is a joke and meant for fun and entertainment.

Blessed are those with youth, beauty, and power for they don’t have to think too deeply to get along.

Blessed are the double minded for they can play all the angles and hedge their bets in this world.

Blessed are the troublemakers for they shall experience their own power.

Blessed are the wishful-thinkers for they can believe all problems are small and manageable.

Blessed are the popular for they can win the approval of fools in high places. (Dick Keyes)
